Everyone is different and there is no “one boot fits all” when it comes to training. People of a similar ability may train together but actually need a very different plan to get them best out of themselves. For example, men and women have very different training requirements. Men might push themselves harder but have a higher chance of developing an injury because of it. Women might find training harder during various points in the menstrual cycle or if they are going through the menopause. All athletes over 40 are going through physiological changes which cause things like muscle loss which needs to be understood and accounted for. The job of a coach is to identify each requirement and consideration to build a plan around the athlete that is tailored to bring out the best in them. You don’t get this from downloadable plans on the internet!
Every coach should have a philosophy and be able to understand the implications of that philosophy. I am very much a fan of hard work in training which creates the stimulus that causes the body to adapt. To support the hard work, we need to make sure that the body is conditioned to cope with what we are demanding from it and we do this with a gradual build up, strength training and ample recovery periods. After all, that recovery time is when the body gets stronger! This is why I like to use the tag line; Train hard, train smart!
