I’ve always had a fascination with athlete development ever since I first started running in 2014 and realising how different strategies affected my own running. Back then, I didn’t have a clue and I was quite open to new information (no matter how flawed) when people (that seemed to know what they were talking about) suggested a new training method. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn’t.
It left me quite frustrated not knowing what I should be doing, sometimes a method would work, but then sometimes it didn’t. This caused me to start doing my research purchasing books and diligently researching online. But I was still left frustrated as there was no credence to the articles I read online and a lot of the information was far too generalised. It was then I did my England Athletics’ Leader in Running Fitness (LiRF) which introduced me to some new information on training that I wasn’t aware of. This piqued my interest and sent me down a new route of research. However, It wasn’t until taking the Coach in Running Fitness (CiRF) course that things began to make sense. It explained why sometimes, some methods of training would work, whilst sometimes they would not. I learned that training was a very individual thing and what might work for one person may not necessarily work for another. I wanted to share this knowledge with other runners that might be in the same situation as I used to be. Maybe, they are following a plan they downloaded but just is not suited to them and becoming frustrated with their progress, maybe they have stagnated and just don’t know how to pull themselves out of it.
So, that’s why I created TeamBR. It gives me a platform to be able to educate runners so that they could better develop themselves and if I can make them see how fun it can be, then I’m onto a winner. It’s still early days at the moment I do plan to eventually affiliate the club with England Athletics (although that does come with a stack load of extra work), but for now my main focus is getting the club established and making sure that I practice what I preach!
